Concepts of Physics by HC Varma is the best book at the +2 level. It begins each chapter by talking about an event in real life and telling Physics behind the phenomenon. Slowly the equations come into play and then come to the applications of the equations. This enables every reader to grasp the concepts with perfections.
Once the theory part is done, then comes to the solved example which is like a mild stone to practice. They explain how to approach the questions.
USP of the book is the Short answer questions and MCQ which questions the reader about how much he has grasped and I feel this part is the most underrated.
The exercises are designed well because the first 25% questions are simple and based on the basic concept and then they slowly start getting complex which enables the students to understand where the theory part is weak so they can rectify it.
The best topics covered in s book are Electrostatics, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Modern Physics and Optics. Books by HC Varma cover all the basic concepts of Physics that students preparing for entrance exams need to know about. They also have good illustrations that help the student to make concepts clear as well as a wide range of problems with varying levels of difficulty are given.
Concepts of Physics by HC Varma is a Physics textbook. It is published as a two-volume set, with each volume roughly covering the physics syllabus of class XI and class XII respectively. The book is extensively popular amongst ALL students preparing for competitive exams, especially for the IIT JEE Main & IIT JEE Advance and all other state level engineering entrance because book serves as ideal study material for competitive exams like IIT-JEE and other state level engineering exams.
HC Varma divided the book into 2 volumes. Description of each section. Mechanics and its Properties. Optics Wave Theorem Second Volume covers Thermo-Physics. Electromagnetic Effect Modern Physics Content in Concept of Physics First Book Basics of Physics Role of Mathematics in Physics Kinematics and its application Types of Forces Properties of Motion and Rest Laws of Newton. Circulatory Motion Work and Energy. Friction and its effect Centre and Linear momentum S.H.M Sound and Light Waves. Gravity and its Types Mechanical Properties of Matter. Rotational Properties. Optics and optical instruments Photometry and Lightspeed Second Book Electric field and Potential.Heating Effect Calorimetry. Thermodynamics and its all law Transfer of Gases Gases and its theories Electrostatics and its basic types Properties of Matter Magnetism and its Application Induction. Semiconductor and Semiconductor Device. Alternating Current. Type of Waves Theory of Relativity. Effect of Current on gases. Photo-Electric Effect. Atomic Models Types of Spectrum and rays Nuclear Physics and its effect
Some best Points of the book is listed below.
- Simple and lucid language is used by HC Varma.
- Coherency in the flow of ideas and concepts.
- HCV Co-relates topics which are scattered in different places; Does not to jump from one topic to another.
- Relatively easier than other books like I.E.Irodov.
- The books connect physics to our day to day life because Examples are from real life, doesn’t talk about objects which a general Indian student hasn’t seen in his life.
- Contains an adequate number of problems- neither too little nor too high. And all problems are doable.
- Very conceptual MCQs.
- Question asked within a chapter as well as at the end are of varying difficulty and each one is closely inter-related. Concept learned from the previous one can be applied in next one
